DesktopBSD 1.7 snapshot

First remember it’s an early snapshot, so there will be certainly some problems! But apart from that it’s DesktopBSD based on FreeBSD 7.0R. I did a first test, there are some minor quirks with the mounting tool and the scheduler is SCHED_4BSD, so it has got a performance drop especially on uniprocessor systems. The first preview version will follow soon with SCHED_ULE activated and some other useful addons. So if you’re eager to test, you’re welcome :) But remember it’s an early test!

You can download the snapshots there (scroll to the bottom) at the usual servers (mirror too). We have prebuild packages for FreeBSD7 on the server.

I hope that this will become DesktopBSD 2.0, with FreeBSD 7 and KDE 4.

  2. Oliver Herold Says:

KDE 4.1 will be out in summer first, so no there will be first a release with FreeBSD 7 and without KDE 4.

    Yeah, i agree with zaratustra..
DesktopBSD 2.0 with FreeBSD 7 and KDE 4 would be a good name.

Other distros with minor kde and freebsd 7 could remain 1.x

I’m downloading it. I like the new freebsd 7 innovations although Linux still catch the eye..
One good improvement would be the wireless stuff.. however, since bsd is still server oriented, i guess this new multicore-system they developed is very good.
    Lovely to website servers.
Impressive effort to improve database performance.

    nice way to go.
I expect to see DesktopBSD 2.0

    Good Páscoa

There is a lot of new development in FreeBSD 7 in terms of wireless drivers.

i REALLY hope that desktopbsd developers DO NOT inculde KDE4, at least it becomes 4.3. desktopbsd should use freebsd7 as a base, but kde 3.5.10 is as good as it gets.

  10. Bill Laird Says:

Still using FreeBSD but trying PCBSD at present.
KDE 4 in PCBSD isn’t stable so stick a while with KDE 3.5.
Option to login as root would be useful to save continual SU’s especially during initial post-install setup (PCBSD).

    Anyway will try DesktopBSD shortly.

Good work! And stay off KDE 4.X until its proven stable. But you guys at D-BSD need to make more noise, PC-BSD is stealing the show ;)
