DesktopBSD 1.7 available

The final release of DesktopBSD 1.7 is now available for download.

I am glad to announce the immediate availability of DesktopBSD 1.7.

This new release comes with FreeBSD 7.2-RELEASE-p3 as base system and KDE 3.5.10 as desktop environment and includes a large number of pre-installed applications. The easy-to-use graphical installer and utilities allow for a simple installation and configuration process.

Notable changes include:

FreeBSD 7.2 as stable and secure base system

KDE 3.5.10 as mature and easy-to-use desktop environment

OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 as feature-rich office suite

Pre-installed Java SE 6 environment

X.Org release 7.4 with extensive graphics hardware support

Large number of enhancements and fixes

Please read the release notes for more information. ISO images of the installation media can be downloaded using FTP, HTTP or BitTorrent from the download page.

This is the last and final release of the DesktopBSD project. I find myself having less and less time to spare lately and no longer desire to keep developing and maintaining this project. However, because DesktopBSD is based entirely on FreeBSD, further support for the operating system and availability of up-to-date software for DesktopBSD 1.7 is ensured.

Thanks to everyone who helped prepare this release!

Warning: Problems with portupgrade 2.4

The DesktopBSD Package Manager is incompatible with the new portupgrade 2.4.2/2.4.3 release in...

The DesktopBSD Package Manager is incompatible with the new portupgrade 2.4.* releases in the ports collection, causing the upgrade function to stop working.

The problem is that between portupgrade 2.3 and portupgrade 2.4, the behavior of the -N option has changed.

Previously, this option would activate a "mixed mode" that would install specified packages if they are not present on the system and upgrade those that are already installed.

Now, only installations are performed when -N is enabled. Packages marked for upgrade in the package manager fail with this message:

** Found already installed package(s) of 'sysutils/desktopbsd-tools': desktopbsd-tools-1.1_1

We are currently working on a solution for this issue. Please avoid upgrades of portupgrade until this problem has been resolved.

If you have already upgraded, you can follow these instructions from a forums post to downgrade to portupgrade 2.3.
